Current Projects

505 Chapel Hill Street

The NAACP Durham Branch is a strong supporter of the 505 Chapel Hill Street Project. The NAACP believes that the project has the potential to create a more equitable and inclusive Durham community by providing affordable housing, creating jobs, and investing in a historically Black neighborhood.

The NAACP has also advocated for the project to include a community benefits agreement (CBA). A CBA is a legally binding contract between a developer and a community that ensures that the community benefits from the development. For example, a CBA could require the developer to hire local residents, provide job training programs, and invest in community amenities.

The City of Durham has committed to working with the NAACP and other community stakeholders to ensure that the 505 Chapel Hill Street Project benefits all Durham residents.

The Simplifying Codes for Affordable Development (SCAD) initiative is a set of proposed amendments to the City of Durham's Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) that are designed to make it easier and more affordable to build affordable housing in Durham. The Durham NAACP is a strong supporter of the SCAD initiative.

The NAACP believes that the SCAD initiative will help to address the shortage of affordable housing in Durham. The NAACP also believes that the SCAD initiative will help to promote equity and inclusion in Durham by making it easier for people of all income levels to live in the city.

The SCAD initiative is currently being reviewed by the City of Durham Planning Commission. The Planning Commission is expected to make a recommendation on the SCAD initiative to the Durham City Council in early 2024.

City Workers Salary Complaints

The NAACP Durham Branch has been a vocal advocate for city workers in Durham, North Carolina, who have complained about their salaries. In 2022, the NAACP launched a campaign called "Pay Durham Workers Fairly." The campaign calls for the City of Durham to provide its workers with a living wage and to address racial disparities in pay.

The NAACP Durham Branch has documented a number of cases of city workers who are struggling to make ends meet on their current salaries. For example, the NAACP has spoken to city workers who are forced to work multiple jobs to support their families and who have to choose between paying their rent and putting food on the table.

The NAACP Durham Branch has also found that there are significant racial disparities in pay among city workers. Black city workers are more likely to be employed in lower-paying jobs and are less likely to be promoted to higher-paying positions.

The NAACP Durham Branch is calling on the City of Durham to take a number of steps to address the issue of city worker salaries, including:

  • Conducting a pay equity study to identify and address racial disparities in pay.

  • Raising the minimum wage for city workers to a living wage.

  • Providing city workers with more opportunities for advancement and professional development.

The NAACP Durham Branch is a strong advocate for gun violence prevention. The NAACP believes that gun violence is a public health crisis that disproportionately impacts Black and brown communities. The NAACP has called on the City of Durham to take a number of steps to address gun violence, including:

  • Investing in community-based violence prevention programs.

  • Enacting stricter gun control laws.

  • Providing more resources to law enforcement to investigate and prosecute gun crimes.

The NAACP Durham Branch has also called on the City of Durham to declare gun violence a public health emergency. This would allow the city to access additional resources and funding to address gun violence.

The NAACP Durham Branch is working with other community partners to raise awareness about gun violence and to advocate for gun violence prevention policies. The NAACP is also working to provide support to victims of gun violence and their families.

Durham Fire and Police Pay

The NAACP Durham Branch is a strong advocate for Durham police and fire personnel. The NAACP believes that police and fire personnel deserve to be paid fairly for their work and to have access to the resources they need to do their jobs safely and effectively.

The NAACP Durham Branch has called on the City of Durham to do a number of things to improve pay and working conditions for police and fire personnel, including:

  • Raising the starting salary for police and fire personnel to a competitive level.

  • Providing police and fire personnel with more opportunities for advancement and professional development.

  • Investing in new equipment and training for police and fire personnel.

  • Addressing racial disparities in pay and promotions among police and fire personnel.

The NAACP Durham Branch has also called on the City of Durham to hire more police and fire personnel. The NAACP believes that the City of Durham is currently understaffed in both departments, which is putting a strain on police and fire personnel and making it difficult for them to respond to emergencies effectively.

The NAACP Durham Branch is working with other community partners to raise awareness about the need to improve pay and working conditions for Durham police and fire personnel. The NAACP is also advocating for policies that will make Durham a more attractive place for police and fire personnel to work and live.

The NAACP Durham Branch is a strong advocate for civic engagement and voter participation. The NAACP believes that everyone deserves to have a voice in our democracy and that everyone deserves to be represented by elected officials who will fight for their needs.

Insurance for Post-Incarcerated Individuals

The NAACP Durham Branch is a strong advocate for post-incarcerated individuals and their access to healthcare. The NAACP believes that everyone deserves to have access to quality healthcare, regardless of their past.

The NAACP Durham Branch has called on the City of Durham and the state of North Carolina to do more to provide health insurance coverage to post-incarcerated individuals. The NAACP has also called for the expansion of Medicaid in North Carolina, which would provide health insurance coverage to thousands of low-income North Carolinians, including many post-incarcerated individuals.

The NAACP Durham Branch is also working with community partners to provide support to post-incarcerated individuals who are struggling to obtain health insurance. The NAACP can help post-incarcerated individuals identify and apply for health insurance programs, such as Medicaid and CHIP. The NAACP can also help post-incarcerated individuals find affordable healthcare providers.
